🔥 Tom Slocum (VP, Sales @ TrainYo): 3 Tips to get MGMT-level Promos
Do you ever feel like you're just waiting for your manager to recognize your potential?
Waiting to be recognized? To get that tap on the shoulder? You’re not alone! That's how many people feel—and it's frustrating!
As a team leader, I understand how hard it is to get noticed. That's why I'm going to share my personal tips on how I manage up successfully.
1. Promotion Path 🔝
The first thing is to speak up for the position you want.
You need to let your manager know exactly what would make you happy and what level of responsibility would make sense for you at this time in your career.
If they don't take action, then it's time for plan B: start acting like a leader on your team by taking ownership of projects and responsibilities that are already yours. Take on more than your fair share of work and make sure it gets done right.
2. Make Mentorship Happen
Next, find a mentor for feedback and support. This person can help guide you through the process as well as offer advice when things get tough on the job.
They'll also provide encouragement when things seem bleakest—because believe me, things will be bleak sometimes!
3. Show up with Solutions
Finally, take work off your manager’s plate by finding ways to solve problems before they reach her desk (or email inbox). When it comes to leading by example, there's no better way than by taking initiative!
If there's something that needs to be done—especially if it will help improve productivity or efficiency—don't wait around for someone else to do it; just go ahead and get it done yourself!
Your team members will notice when someone steps up and takes charge of situations like these, and they'll appreciate it too!
Tom’s Final thoughts
Managing up is the art of getting what you want from your managers. Whether you want more responsibility, a promotion, or just a more comfortable work environment, managing up is one of the best ways to get it.
